RU7 Old Taffrail Log
Absolutely beautiful condition! Walker's Cherub III taffrail ship's log complete set in original wooden box.
Take a deep look at our photos. This set is one of the finest "Cherub III" sets we've seen in our 22 years in the nautical antique business. The jeweler's finish on the brass "fish," the meter and the other parts is amazing.
Invented in the 17th century and developed in the 18th, his marine gear was depended upon to determine the ship's speed and distance traveled. The meter was mounted on the back (taffrail) rail of the ship and the spinner was dropped in the water with a long line connected to the meter. As the spinner turned it drove the gears in the meter to note the speed. Only today's GPS has replaced these units.
The old fisherman's tale about the need for the two spinners: a shark often took one!
This wonderful piece of early marine science dates to the early 1900s.
The box is 19 inches by 11 by 5 1/2
A shipping cost of $90 has been included in the price shown below to the lower 48 U.S. States.
