L18 Very Rare Pair of British Navy Lanterns
This is a VERY RARE opportunity to purchase a 117 year old part of British naval history. A spectacular old pair of Royal Navy huge copper masthead lanterns. This matched pair was made by Bulpitt and Sons, Birmingham, UK in 1903. Now beautifully restored to their original copper glory, we will sell as a pair or separately. If one buys the pair, a special Royal Navy cup is included so the new owner can sip his English Breakfast Tea while enjoying his unique nautical antiques.
Starting first with the lantern shown on the left: a replacement copper back slide panel was made to replace with missing original. There is a age dent on the left side of the top and the Royal Navy "arrow" symbol is shown at the front. The lens on this lantern has turned slightly purple over its 100 plus years and is in excellent condition with the exception of a small "chew" on the lower right side. The original oil font has been electrified.
The lantern on the right has its original brass trim intact. Over the years it was removed on the lantern on the left. We've left it on the right lantern since it is the original Bulpitt design but one could always take the trim off in order to make the match perfect.
Now to the lantern on the right: Somewhere in its history it took a hit to its top stack. Looking at the photos one can see the top has a slightly jaunty tilt to the right. The lantern has also earned a few dents at sea and the back of the stack shows some damage due to the top hit.. This lantern has a perfect lens turning a light purple due to its age. The original lighting oil font is missing and a wooden replacement was made to serve as the base for the electric socket. Both lanterns have been newly wired.
The lanterns stand 18 inches tall 10 inches wide and 12 inches in depth.
The lenses are 225 degree of clear glass.
Lantern price includes shipping cost of $200 for the pair to lower 48 U.S. states.
