This is a wonderful old 140 year old Ritchie "banana" box compass. E.S. Ritchie invented the liquid filled compass in the mid-1800's to stabilize the compass card while the vessel was rolling and pitching.
The U.S. Navy was the first big customer in 1860. The 7 inch compass size is used for big ships and made in Boston. According to Ritchie's records it was sold to F.J. Sloane of Boston on April 10, 1879.
The mahogany compass box is 12" x 12" x 6" high. Compass is 7" in diameter.
